Backslidden

Lately, I’ve realized how quickly life can pull us into a rhythm that feels endless, busy schedules, constant noise, responsibilities that never seem to end. I still pray… you know? I know I have roots in Christ. But recently, I caught myself missing the long conversations I used to have with Jesus. Those moments when His voice was clear, when His presence felt near.

And then it hit me…how easily backsliding can creep in.

The Bible says in Jeremiah 17:9:

“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?”

It’s true. My thoughts started to take their own paths, my words followed, and my heart felt heavy. Suddenly, everything around me seemed like water slipping through my fingers, running, falling, impossible to hold. I was moody, tired, and just going through motions.

That is the reality of backsliding. It’s not always loud rebellion. Sometimes it’s the slow drift.

The beauty of God’s love is this, backsliding does not push Him away. In fact, He promises the opposite.

Hosea 14:4 says:

“I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely, for my anger has turned away from him.”

Isn’t that incredible? The God of the universe is not standing with arms folded, waiting to scold us. He is leaning in with arms wide open, ready to restore, to heal, to welcome us back to where we should be.

What convicts us is not shame , it’s the Holy Spirit gently whispering: “Come back.” He reminds us of the sweetness of God’s presence.
He pulls our minds back to the Word we’ve read before.
He convinces us that joy and peace are still ours, if only we would turn our face toward Jesus again.

John 14:26 says:

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”

That’s His role. Not to condemn us, but to remind and restore us.

Friend, maybe you feel like this today… drained, far away, with life slipping like water through your hands. Here’s the truth, you don’t have to stay there. You can turn back. Acknowledge to the Holy Spirit where you are. Say it plainly to God. He knows already. Confession unlocks honesty in prayer. “Return, faithless people; I will cure you of backsliding.” (Jer 3:22) Pick up the Word again, even if it’s just one verse. Let it breathe life into your dry places. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) Pray with simplicity. Don’t overcomplicate it. Just talk to Him. Let your heart pour out, even in whispers. “The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” (Psalm 145:18) Surround yourself with truth. Worship, godly community, uplifting words that keep you anchored.

Backsliding is real, and so is God’s restoring power. You may feel weary, ashamed, or distant, but His Spirit is still drawing you.

So let me ask you:
When was the last time you sat quietly and let Him speak?
What would it look like for you to intentionally carve out space for His presence again?

Don’t wait until everything falls apart. Let the Holy Spirit breathe fresh life into you today. Beloved, you are not too far gone. You are loved.

Love
