No Wi-Fi, Just Us

I walked past a little restaurant in Windhoek the other day, and outside on a chalkboard were these simple words:

“We do not have Wi-Fi. Talk to each other. Pretend it’s 1973.”

I had to stop. It hit me hard. Because isn’t it true? Everywhere we go, phones are out. Families sitting around a dinner table, each person lost in their own glowing screen. Parents scrolling while their kids tug at their sleeves. Travelers in airports, not looking out at the beauty of the world around them but down into devices. Even in church, in the very place we come to encounter the living God, we’re tempted to check notifications instead of His voice.

Phones are not bad in themselves. They capture our memories, they help us stay connected, they even allow us to share encouragement at the click of a button. But if we’re honest, they also steal from us. They steal time. They steal presence. They steal moments we will never get back.

Did you know?
• Studies show the average person checks their phone over 150 times a day.
• Families spend about 37 minutes together in quality conversation daily, compared to over 3 hours of screen time on average.
• Nearly 47% of people say they feel “addicted” to their phones, yet struggle to put them down.

It has become a modern-day plague. And like all plagues, it spreads quietly until suddenly you realize what it has cost you, connection, peace, and presence.

But what if we flipped the script? What if we embraced those “no Wi-Fi” moments as holy ground? What if the absence of a signal was actually an invitation to tune into the people right in front of us? To look into our children’s eyes, to laugh with our spouse, to hear the heart of a friend, to sit in silence and let God whisper to our souls.

Jesus said:
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” – (Matt 6:34)
and
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)

We don’t know what tomorrow will bring. We only have today. So let’s not waste it distracted by what’s on a screen. Let’s be fully present, with God, with our families, with the gift of now.

Maybe next time you see that little sign, “No Wi-Fi, talk to each other”you’ll take it as a gentle reminder from the Father Himself:

Be here. Be present. Be with Me.

Because the greatest connection we could ever have will never depend on signal strength, but on the posture of our hearts.

Love
