If the nearness of Jesus changes how we see Him, then friendship with Jesus changes how we walk with Him.

It’s one thing to know that Christ is in you. It’s another to live as though He’s sitting next to you on the couch, walking with you on your morning run, or leaning in across the table at breakfast.

Sanctification, the ongoing work of the Spirit making us holy, isn’t just about avoiding sin or “behaving better.” It’s about clearing away everything that keeps us from enjoying Him as our closest friend. The more we’re sanctified, the more unhindered our relationship becomes.

Picture this, Jesus sitting across a table chatting away, laughing. You know this about me, I have a friend, she is my best friend… her laughter always makes me feel warm and fussy inside, like home. I always imagine that laughter times a million when I image Jesus sitting with me, and that brings such joy to my heart.

Jesus didn’t call His disciples servants forever. In John 15:15, He said:

“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends for everything I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”

Friendship means shared life, shared secrets, shared mission.
Think about that, Jesus shares Himself with you.

It’s why you can pour out your heart without reservation, knowing He won’t turn away.
It’s why you can laugh with Him when joy bubbles up unexpectedly. It’s why you can sit in silence together, and the quiet feels full, not empty.

I’ve known Him as Savior. I’ve worshipped Him as King. But the moments that have marked me most deeply are the ones when I’ve known Him as Friend. The time I told Him something silly, something I thought was too small to bring up, and I felt His delight that I had. The long drive when I spoke to Him like He was in the passenger seat, and halfway through, realized He truly was.

Sanctification doesn’t make friendship with Jesus possible, it makes it natural. The more our hearts are made like His, the more our days become conversations rather than ceremonies, companionship rather than mere compliance.

Yes, He is holy. Yes, He is the Alpha and Omega. But He is also the Friend who leans in close, listens without distraction, and says, “You’re mine, and I’m not going anywhere.”

The more you walk with Him, the more you’ll realize,
you’re not just living for Him.
You’re living with Him.

And that changes everything.
