“But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” (Jam 1:6)
Have you ever wondered why some seasons leave you feeling completely disoriented?
One moment you are convinced God is faithful. The next moment fear convinces you He has forgotten you.
One day you speak faith over your future. The next day you undo it all with words of defeat.
It feels exhausting. James gives us a picture that is impossible to ignore. A person who lives in doubt is like a wave of the sea. A wave has no foundation of its own. It rises only because something else pushes it. It crashes because something else controls it. It is never settled. Never anchored. Never at peace.
Could it be that this is why so many believers feel emotionally unstable? Not because God has moved, but because we have become double minded.
Double mindedness is not simply asking questions. God welcomes honest questions. Double mindedness is trying to stand with one foot in faith and the other in fear. It is believing God’s promises on Sunday, yet allowing circumstances to become our theology by Monday.
The waves do not carry you forward. They simply toss you around until you no longer know which direction is home. So how do we become grounded?
We return to what never changes. We plant ourselves in God’s *Word* until His voice becomes louder than our feelings.
We remind ourselves daily of what He has already spoken instead of rehearsing what life is shouting. We stop feeding every anxious thought. We capture it. We weigh it against *Scripture*. If it does not sound like our Father, it does not deserve a permanent home in our minds.
Paul writes, “Take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Cor 10:5)
Notice he says every thought. Not just the really bad ones. *Every thought*.
Because every thought eventually becomes a belief. Every belief eventually becomes words. Every word eventually shapes the direction of our lives.
Grounding yourself is not a once off decision. It is a daily posture. It is waking up each morning and saying, “Lord, today I choose Your truth over my emotions. Your promises over my panic. Your character over my circumstances.”
Trees survive storms because of what nobody sees. Their roots.
Likewise, believers remain standing because of what nobody sees either. The private moments in God’s presence. The quiet surrender. The hidden obedience. The daily decision to trust when nothing around you makes sense.
The waves may still come. The wind may still blow. But a life rooted in Christ is no longer controlled by either.
Today, refuse to be tossed around by every fear, every opinion, every report and every emotion.
Stand.
Anchor yourself in His Word. Because when your life is grounded in Jesus, the storm may shake you, but it will never own you.
Love
