Choose wisely

What we say… matters.

In fact, our words might just be the most powerful force we carry as human beings. With a single sentence, we can breathe life, or drain it. We can build someone up, or slowly dismantle their soul.

Words shape lives. They carry weight. And while wounds may heal over time, the scars of careless speech often remain much longer than we realize.

The Bible says, “The tongue has the power of life and death…” (Prov 18:21).

This isn’t poetic metaphor, it’s divine truth. Our words have the power to heal or to harm, to affirm or to alienate, to comfort or to crush.

One of the most subtle, and spiritually dangerous, ways we misuse our words is through gossip. And make no mistake, gossip isn’t just saying something false. Even if what you’re saying is true, if you’re speaking about someone who isn’t present to respond or defend themselves, it’s gossip.

Gossip damages the reputation of the one being spoken about, but it also corrupts the heart of the listener. Suddenly, they’re carrying thoughts and assumptions they weren’t meant to have, and now they’re struggling to love or see that person with purity and grace.

“The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts.” (Prov 18:8)

If your words aren’t protecting someone’s heart, they’re likely wounding it.

It’s the same with words spoken inside the walls of our homes become the soundtrack our children carry into adulthood.

• A mother’s frustration, spoken in haste, can wound a child’s confidence.

• A father’s sarcasm, cloaked in humor, can scar a young heart.

• A teenager’s rebellion, spat in anger, can shatter the peace of an entire household.

It’s easy to speak from our emotions. But it takes Holy Spirit strength and self-control to pause, to pray, and to respond in love, especially when tensions run high.

Let’s teach our children not just how to speak, but how to speak life. From the moment they are born, let our voices be the first ones to declare: You are loved. You are chosen. You are God’s delight.

Life is hard. Work, finances, stress, parenting, all of it can wear down the strongest of couples. That’s why it’s vital that spouses become safe places for one another’s hearts.

Let your words to your husband or wife be the bricks that build a haven, not a battlefield.

Choose encouragement over criticism. Blessing over blame. Compassion over correction.

The enemy knows the power of your tongue. He’ll whisper lies to get you speaking defeat over your family, your future, and even your own self-worth. Don’t let him win.

When God created the world, He spoke it into being. That same creative authority has been given to you and me, not to manipulate, but to build, restore, and bless.

So today, consider this:

• What tone lingers when you leave a room?

• What do your children hear more: correction or encouragement?

• Are you using your voice to release healing? Or are your words unknowingly releasing harm?

You may never stand on a stage or write a book, but with your words alone, you have the power to influence the people around you for eternity.

Speak life in your home.

Speak life in your workplace.

Speak life over your spouse, your children, your friends, and even your enemies.

You may not always get it right, but every time you choose to pause, pray, and speak from a place of love, heaven leans in.

Because the God who gave you your voice? He listens. And He uses it.

So today… pay attention to your language. And choose to speak life.

Love
