Fasting? Let’s get practical!

I’ve been called into a 40-day fast. It’s a sacred journey, and a personal one. In fact, Jesus taught us not to broadcast our fasting for attention or applause. He said:

“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do… so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen.”

(Matt 6:16-18)

And yet, I feel released by the Holy Spirit to share this, not as a performance, but as a practical tool to teach, equip, and encourage others who are walking through similar seasons.

So, let’s talk about it:

What should come out of a fast, especially one this intentional and long?

What does Scripture say happens in the wilderness of consecration?

Here’s what I’m learning:

1.  Clarity of Calling

Fasting silences the noise. When Jesus fasted for 40 days (Luke 4), He came out in the power of the Spirit and immediately stepped into His public ministry. Fasting clears the fog. Expect direction, refined purpose, and a sense of assignment to rise as you surrender daily.

2.  Refining and Purification.

In the stillness, God purifies. This is not just physical detox, it’s spiritual fire. Just like Moses on Mount Sinai (Exo 34), fasting becomes a place of holy encounter and personal transformation. Expect the Holy Spirit to lovingly point out what doesn’t belong, bitterness, fear, insecurity, and to burn it away.

3.  Intimacy with God

Fasting is not about deprivation, it’s about divine exchange. The absence of food or whatever you are fasting from, creates room for presence. You feast on the Word. You hear the whisper.

You learn to live on “every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matt 4:4). This isn’t about striving; it’s about sitting.

4.  Breakthrough and Deliverance

Isaiah 58 calls fasting a key to unlock freedom:

“To loose the chains of injustice… to set the oppressed free and break every yoke.”

Sometimes we fast because we feel led. Sometimes we fast because we need chains to break, in our lives, families, bloodlines, or ministries.

Either way, fasting is warfare. It’s an aggressive alignment with Heaven.

5. Authority for the Next Season

Jesus didn’t just leave the wilderness rested, He left empowered.

Fasting is never wasted. It forges new strength. It releases fresh authority. It sharpens discernment. You may go in weary, but you will walk out with power, purpose, and spiritual weight.

I didn’t step into this fast lightly. It’s hard. It’s stretching. But it’s also one of the most holy and fruitful seasons I’ve experienced. Every day, I’m reminded: This isn’t about what I’m giving up. It’s about what He’s pouring in.

He is doing something in the quiet. He is preparing me for what’s ahead. And if you’re on a fasting journey too, I want to say this clearly:

God sees you. He honors it. And He is moving, even in the unseen.

Are you fasting too? Or have you fasted before and seen breakthrough? I’d love to hear what the Lord has done through your season of consecration, let’s share and encourage each other in the comments.
